Measurement of pond water quality

 Introduction:
Water is one of the most important and abundant compounds of the ecosystem. All living organisms on the earth need water for their survival and growth. As of now only earth is the planet having about 70 % of water. But due to increased human population, industrialization, use of fertilizers in the agriculture and man-made activity it is highly polluted with different harmful contaminants. Therefore it is necessary that the quality of drinking water should be checked at regular time interval, because due to use of contaminated drinking water, human population suffers from varied of water borne diseases. so the study of water parameter is needed for analysis.
The availability of good quality water is an indispensable feature for preventing diseases and improving quality of life.

Sample collection:
We collect sample water in a bottle from mosque side  and fisheries pond in JUST campus.

Physical characteristics of pond water:
We observe some physical parameters of this sample water. These are given below-
Color:  greenish yellow
Odor:  no odor
Turbidity: low turbidity
Temperature: 29.80c

Chemical characteristics of pond water:
pH:
We measure pH by a pH meter. The  pH of the pond water is 7.43
Ammonia:
We measure the amount of ammonia of this pond water by a portable spectrophotometer. The model of this spectrophotometer is  DR 2700™ Portable Spectrophotometer at Hach USA.

Procedure:
Ø  We measure ammonia by neslar method
Ø  Sample water need to be particle free. We make it particle free by filter paper which is range from 1 or less micrometer.
Ø  Then we take 25ml DI water and 25ml filter water in a measuring cylinder
Ø  We add 3 drops of  mineral stabilizer in every 25ml because it hinders the formation of color.

Figure: shake/ jar test

Ø  Then shake it
Ø  Then  we add 3 drops of polyvinyl  alcohol  and shake it again
Ø  Then we add 1ml of neslar reagent in every 25ml and shake it
Ø  It shows color change
Ø  Then we take 10ml of DI water in a quartz cell and it place into spectrophotometer, that shows  0.00 mg/l ,that means there is no ammonia

Figure: weight machine

Again we take 10ml sample water into quartz cell and place into spectrophotometer, that  shows result 0.61mg/L ammonia

Result and Discussion:
ü  The result gives the device o.61 mg/l
ü  Which means the range were maintained
ü  NH3-N, N was 380 ness
ü Wavelength eatablish range425 nm.

precaution:
v  Quartz bottle should be use clearly and safe.
water collect carefully and factor must be maintained
